Now, I’m only 15+ years old. I haven’t heard all the supposed great love songs of the 70s and 80s. But I’ve heard a few. And I’ve heard all the “love” songs that play on the radio these days, at least, most of them. Nothing rap is going to appear on this list. I don’t have a number right now, but I’ll let you know when I’m done. Here it goes.
MYSPACE GIRL | THE AFTERS: This isn’t necessarily a love song, but it is fun and quirky. It is based on the true story of the band’s former bassist and his wife, whom he searched on MySpace after having her serve him at an In-N-Out Burger joint. It’s hilarious, and so is the music video.
GOOD VIBRATIONS | THE BEACH BOYS: Being a Beach Boys fan, it would be hard for me not to include them on this list. Plus it made an appearance in my favorite TV show, Lost, so I had to.
JUST WHAT I NEEDED | THE CARS: The Cars were a late 70s-early 80s new wave group. This song is my favorite from them. And no, Circuit City, this is not a love song about you. (I’m sorry if you didn’t get that last bit.)
WITH YOU | CHRIS BROWN: I never said I wasn’t going to include songs from current radio on this list. While Chris Brown is not my favorite, this track is his best and is a great song of devotion. About Chris Brown though. “Kiss Kiss”, “Run It!”, and “Wall to Wall” are pieces of junk.
HOW IN THE WORLD | FAMILY FORCE 5: A track that just came out that could make mainstream radio immediately. Seriously. It is reminiscent of something Justin Timberlake could do if he had a good day.
THE VIDEO STORE/ MOMENT OF TRUTH | FM STATIC: Thousand Foot Krutch frontman Trevor McNevan’s side project brings us these two songs from Critically Ashamed. “The Video Store” is more upbeat and has catchy lyrics about video stores and meeting a girl there. “Moment of Truth” is what McNevan used to propose to his wife.
THE WAY YOU LOOK TONIGHT | FRANK SINATRA: Did you think I would go a list without including Frank the Great?
IRIS | GOO GOO DOLLS: Not much to say here except listen to the song. It’s a true classic.
EVERY LITTLE THING | HAWK NELSON: For those of us who value Christian girls above all, this is our anthem.
MAKING MEMORIES OF US | KEITH URBAN: Representing the country genre here, Keith Urban brings me a couple memorable lines in this track.
MUST HAVE DONE SOMETHING RIGHT | RELIENT K: Why shouldn’t I include this? There are no reasons why. Look it up and buy it. You will not regret it. If I had to name my top 20 favorite songs, this would probably make it.
WONDERFUL WORLD | SAM COOKE: The opening credits song in my favorite film Hitch is perfect here.
FALL FOR YOU | SECONDHAND SERENADE: Another popular song on the radio now is another one of my favorites for this list.
I WILL BE HERE | STEVEN CURTIS CHAPMAN: Wow. Simply incredible. I first heard a Clay Aiken cover actually. But the real thing is something that I would want to sing on my wedding day to my wife. I’m not even gonna lie.
AIN’T NO SUNSHINE | BILL WITHERS: This song has apparently been covered by a lot of people. Check this out: According to Wikipedia, artists such as Justin Timberlake (with Robyn Troup), Maroon 5, Fall Out Boy, Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Finger Eleven, The Police and Bob Marley have all made cover versions. Apparently it’s a good song.
Yep, there’s my list. Like it, love it (no pun intended, okay, maybe there was) or hate it. Lemme know what else goes on here.
Someone bright (namely, the people at VH1) compiled a list of the top 100 love songs of all-time. I only have one song from that list on here.
